Dutch
Etymology
First attested as ad heriuuarda in 997. Potentially derived from either gem-pro *harjawardô- military outpost or a compound derived from nl odt heri army, host and odt warda watch, lookout. A proposed derivation from a compound of nl heer lord (referring in this case to Otto II) and nl odt werde land next to water, riverine island clashes with the oldest attestations.
