Etymology
Probably shortened from the (river) name fi Närvijoki, fi Närpijoki, from earlier fi *Närväjoki, of fi unknown origin. Other theories include derivation from a personal byname/nickname fi närvä meaning "stingy" (akin to fi närppiä) + fi pää, meaning "head", but here specifically "peninsula" (however, the phonetic development into the form fi Närpiö appears difficult to explain) and derivation from an anthroponym fi *Närppi; villages called fi Närppi can be found in southwestern Finland (it may derive from fi närppiä as well as a byname/nickname).
