Etymology
From en la Charōn, from en grc Χάρων. The name of the moon was en 1 American astronomer James W. Christy 1 1978, in reference to a fictional moon of Pluto in a novel by Edmond Hamilton but also influenced by its similarity to en Char, a pet name for en Charlene, his wife's name — hence the alternative American pronunciation, which is used at NASA.

Pronunciation

nb ɑːrɔn 2
nb Kharon
nb Cha ron
Etymology 1
nb, borrowed from nb en Charon Charon, Pluto's largest moon. The astronomical name was proposed by American astronomer James W. Christy after his discovery of the moon in 1978. Christy formed the name partly in reference to Char, the nickname of his wife Charlene, and partly after the mythological Charon, the ferryman of the underworld. The latter association was particularly appropriate for a moon of nb Pluto, since Hades, the Greek ruler of the underworld, corresponds to the Roman god Pluto.
The mythological English name is ultimately from nb la Charōn Charon, ferryman of the underworld, from nb grc Χάρων Kharon, ferryman of the underworld.
Parallel international astronomical forms include da Charon, sv Charon, de Charon, nl Charon, fr Charon, pl Charon and cs Charon.

Etymology 2
nb, ultimately from nb la Charōn Charon, ferryman of the underworld, from nb grc Χάρων Kharon, ferryman of the underworld. In Norwegian, this spelling is an attested alternative to the more usual nb Kharon for the mythological figure.
The origin of the Ancient Greek name is uncertain. It has traditionally been associated with grc χάρων fierce-eyed, bright-eyed, a poetic form of grc χαρωπός fierce-eyed, bright-eyed, but the connection is uncertain.
Compare the parallel learned and historically related forms de Charon, nl Charon, fr Charon, en Charon, la Charōn, and Modern Greek el Χάρων and el Χάρος.
Alternative forms

Proper noun
nb proper noun
nb Greek mythology nb Kharon Charon, ferryman of the underworld
nb Charon frakter de dødes sjeler over elven til dødsriket. Charon ferries the souls of the dead across the river to the underworld.
nb 2010 Inge Eidsvåg Minnene ser oss Carlson ligner mistenkelig på Charon, fergemannen i gresk mytologi som frakter de døde sjeler til dødsriket over elva Styx. Carlson bears a suspicious resemblance to Charon, the ferryman in Greek mythology who transports the souls of the dead to the underworld across the river Styx.
Usage notes
nb Kharon is the usual Norwegian spelling for the mythological ferryman, while nb Charon is the established astronomical name for Pluto's largest moon. The spelling nb Charon nevertheless also occurs in Norwegian for the mythological figure.
