Etymology
While folk etymology connected it to de Oger ogre, the mountain's name actually derives from the formerly common spelling de Heiger, from dialectal de gmh Hej-Gêr, gmh dr hej Ger high point, large spear, composed of gmh hej high (presumably a derivation from gmw-pro *hauh) and gmw-pro *gaiʀ javelin, spear.Daniel Anker (Hrsg.): Eiger – Die vertikale Arena. 4., überarb. Auflage. AS Verlag, Zürich 2008, S. 71.
