Usage notes
tl Filipino as a language was designated as the official name of the national language, replacing tl Pilipino, in the 1987 Constitution.
tl Filipino as a person used to refer to a male Philippine-born person of pure or majority Spanish descent, just like the term tl insulares (from the plural of es insular), during the Spanish era of the Philippines, until it was applied to all the citizens of the Philippines as a nationality of the First Philippine Republic after the Philippine Revolution in 1898. The term was eventually spelled as tl Pilipino using the Abakada alphabet in the early 20th century. In 2013, after the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino (KWF) issued its resolution to rename the country from tl Pilipinas to tl Filipinas, it also promoted the use of tl Filipino instead of tl Pilipino to refer to a Filipino person and the adjective pertaining to the Philippines. In 2021, the KWF reversed its policy and returned to the previous spelling of tl Pilipino, which has more widespread use.
