Etymology
From fi salo wilderness, in place names in its obsolete meaning a wooded island. The Southwest Finnish town derives from this meaning, as the site of the original church in the area was on an island (but no longer an island due to glacial rebound), and this island likely had a name ending in fi salo wilderness. The town was then named by shortening that name. The surname, besides deriving from place names, was also adopted by many families at the turn of the 20th century, interpreted as wild forest.
