Etymology
From it la -eāmus first-person plural present subjunctive suffix of the e-conjugation and la -iāmus same of the i-conjugation. Repurposed as general first-person plural suffix for all conjugations and moods. Compare the second-person plural it -iate, where the distinction between the conjugations was also lost, but the form did not encroach on the indicative and imperative.
