Etymology
First recorded in 1578 as en Skallfield; en enm *Scalfel 1, from en non - non skalli fjall baldness peak 1.
The form en Scawfell predominated during the 19th century before the Ordnance Survey's adoption of the form Scafell displaced it; see Scafell#Name history.
Pronunciation
en /ˈskɔːfəl/ /skɑːˈfɛl/ spelling pronunciation
Proper noun
A mountain in Cumbria, England.
Usage notes
Wikipedia regards Scafell as a secondary peak, neighbouring en Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. However, the Ordnance Survey makes no such distinction, listing Scafell Pike only. It may be better, therefore, to regard Scafell as the short form of Scafell Pike. The fell country to the south-west is named Sca Fell.
