Dutch
Etymology
First attested as hellum in the 13th century. Potentially a compound of either ofs Halle a personal name or gem-pro *halha- bend in a highland and nl heem home, settlement. An alternative hypothesis proposes a derivation from nl helm helmet; several nearby toponyms contain the element nl schild shield. Compare nl Hall and nl Hallum.
