perho
Finnish
fi:+ (kunta)
Etymology
In many cases from fi perho, as an adopted surname due to its meaning butterfly. However, older attestations of the name, found in both western and eastern Finland, are harder to explain. In Eastern Finland, vernacular forms of fi ru Порфи́рий are one possibility. The place is probably named after a body of water, which itself seems to be from an anthroponym (from Tavastia, in what counts as western Finland).
