frp -on
French
Etymology
fr frm, from fr fro -omes, fro -umes first-person plural present indicative ending, of obscure and disputed origin. Possibly derived from the fr frk - termination gmw-pro *-ōmēs, gmw-pro *-umēs first-person plural present indicative ending,1 2 30 16 from fr gem-pro *-ōmaz, gem-pro *-amaz, related to goh -ōmēs, goh -umēs, non -um, got -𐌿𐌼, got -𐌰𐌼. Another hypothesis claims that it was generalised from fro sons, the 1st person plural indicative present of fro estre (modern standard fr sommes — fr être).4 4 952 360
Compare oc -èm, oc -am, oc -im, oc -em; la -āmus, la -ēmus, la -imus -imus, -īmus. If French had directly inherited the Latin first-person plural ending, one would expect *-ens, *-oins, *-mes, and *-ins.
