Central Franconian
Alternative forms
gmw-cfr Schät Scheat chiefly western Moselle Franconian variant
Etymology
The expected outcome of gmw-cfr gmh schade would be *šāt or *šāde. Schatte can only be derived from the variant gmh schatwe, from earlier gmh schatewe, gmh *schadewe. Alternatively, it could be borrowed from gmw-cfr de Schatten. This seems less likely, but might have occurred in order to avoid homophony with gmw-cfr Schade damage. In any case, eventually from gmw-cfr goh scato, goh *scado.
