Etymology
The attribute “Maine” is after the region where the breed originally became popular. For the second part, there are several theories. The dominant one is that it refers to a resemblance of the breed to the raccoon,Maine Coon Cats Jennifer Quasha Rosen Publishing 2000 https://books.google.com/books?id=ThKAaeNwbgEC&pg=PA1&dq=raccoon&hl=en 1 leading some to propose the theoretical impossibility of the cat being a crossbreed with the raccoon. The Maine Coon Cat Liza Gardner Walsh Down East Books 2013 https://books.google.com/books?id=IGpVBAAAQBAJ&pg=PA26&dq=raccoon&hl=en 26 Another theory is that the name derives from a legendary Captain Tom Coon, who is said to have brought over such exotic cats.
