German
Etymology
Compound of de Buche Ecker. The now rare simplex Ecker from de gmh ackeran, gmh eckern; only once attested in de goh ekarn. Ultimately from de gem-pro *akraną, whence also en acorn. An original neuter or masculine whose final -n was interpreted as a plural morpheme and which was subsequently made into a feminine. Kluge (24th edition) considers it a chiefly Low German word (compare gml ākeren, gml eckeren).
