nudel
German
Etymology
Attested since 16th century, further origin de unknown. Perhaps from a variant of de Knödel,Nudel such as Silesian de gmw-ecg Knudel. The unusual loss of k- is apparently attested in vls noedel dumpling. If already de dum -, such a dialectal form might have been brought to eastern Germany by Flemish settlers. (Standard nl noedel stems from the German.)
An alternative theory derives it from de lld menudli small piece of dough found in soup, from de la minutulus, diminutive of la minūtus diminished, diminutive, lessened.
