Etymology
From de gmh felse, gmh fels, from de goh fels m (8. c), goh felis m (8. c), goh feliso m (8. c), goh felisa f (9. c), possibly from de gmw-pro *falis rock, cliff, whence osx felis, dum vels.
Wolfgang Pfeifer (etymologist) Pfeifer is uncertain about the further origin. In one theory, he mentions the comparison to non fjall, sv fjäll, sa पाषाण pāṣāṇá, grc πέλλα, sga all (from cel-pro *ɸallom) and thus reconstructs de ine-pro *pels-, ine-pro *pelis-. In another theory he mentions, the Old High German, Old Saxon and Middle Dutch terms are taken as a continuation of Pre-Indo-European ine-pro *palá- mountain whence also fr falaise cliff.
