First attested as nerven in 1392. Compound of nl dum ner nearby and the dative plural form of nl hof farmstead, homestead. So named to distinguish the settlement from nl Verhoven. Compare also the toponyms nl Naastenbest and nl Verrenbest and nl Doonheide and nl Verreheide.
