Finnish
Etymology
From fi urj-fin-pro *-ici- (related to krl -si- and vep -isi-), from fi fiu-pro *-ńće *-ńće-j, urj-pro *-ńśe *-nśe-j; derived from the same ending as in fi -ista valita (see urj-fin-pro *-istak).
Interfix
fi interfix
Marker of conditional mood in verbs.
fi voi he can voisi voisi he could
fi katson I watch katsoisin katsoisin I would watch
Usage notes
Appended to the strong verbal stem; final fi e or fi i gets absorbed to fi i instead of forming a diphthong or long vowel, such as fi juokse- > fi juoksisi-, and in the case the stem ends in a diphthong, the initial vowel of such is mostly dropped like in past forms for such verbs, such as (indicative) present fi syön I eat, past fi söin I ate, conditional fi söisin I would eat.
