Etymology
Disputed. Possibly by apheresis from a Scandinavian form of la Iacobus; alternatively related to et kaup (“trade, goods”), an early Germanic loan, in an agent sense “merchant” — compare archaic fi kauppi (“merchant”). First attested as Latin Caupo in the Chronicon Livoniae (c. 1224–1227). Compare fi Kauppi.
