Etymology
de nds-de Niednagel, either from unattested de gml or from de nl nijnagel, nl nijdnagel (attested as nijnnaghel, 1562). The words may originally be derived from de nl nijpen, nl knijpen to nip, pinch. The later form with -d- is due to the belief that such and other harms are caused by other people's envy (nl nijd, nds-de Nied, de Neid); compare fr envie envy, hangnail.
