Etymology
From northwestern de gmh kirn kirn, gmh *kirne, from de gem-pro *kirnijǭ. Cognate with nl karn, en churn. The gmh - word appears to be attested only in de Bruder Hans (ca. 1400), who may have been a Low Franconian. However, its existence among the Zipser Germans Zipser Saxons, who emigrated from the Rhineland before 1300, proves it as native. Compare modern gmw-cfr Kier, Kiern, Kern. The alternative form de Karn is from nds -.
