Etymology
From osp ar مَرَّاكُش. First documented in the Cantar de mio Cid Cid. It would have been first borrowed into Romance in a shape like /maˈrɔkos/, with /ɔ/ rendering an Arabic [ɒː] or similar (cf. roa-opt Marrocos). It seems that en route to Castille it was “translated” into /maˈru͡ekos/ according to the cross-dialectal correspondence /ɔ/ ⇄ /u͡e/ (as in pt forte ⇄ es fuerte).
