Etymology
20th century, from now archaic de Schmonzes idle talk -ette (after de Operette or the like). The first component is from de yi שמאָנצעס, itself likely from de he שְׁמוּעוֹת šəmūʿōṯ rumours. The alternative form with u probably through (etymologically unfounded) association with de schmunzeln to smile slightly, smirk.
