Spaten

spaten späten German Etymology The word was originally restricted to Low and Central German: from de gmh spade, gmh spate and de gml spade, both from de osx spado (possibly also goh *spato), from de gem-pro *spadô. Due to its northern origin the form has undergone open-syllable lengthening before -t- (which was generally blocked in Upper German). Cognate to en spade; see there for further cognates.
