nb, borrowed from nb la Īō Io, from nb grc Ἰώ Io, itself of nb qsb-grc - origin. The meaning and ultimate origin of the Pre-Greek name are unknown.
The astronomical names derive from the mythological figure. Simon Marius proposed the name Io for Jupiter's innermost Galilean moon in 1614, following a suggestion by Johannes Kepler that the four moons be named after mythological figures associated with Jupiter. The names became generally adopted in the mid-19th century. The asteroid 85 Io was discovered by Christian Heinrich Friedrich Peters on 19 September 1865 and likewise named after the mythological Io.
