-ιά -ία ἰά ἴα Appendix:Variations of "ia"
Ancient Greek
Etymology
grc feminine nouns :der ine-pro:*-ih₂<id:feminine suffix>
From grc ine-pro *-ih₂ *-ih₂ ~ *-yéh₂s, related to grc -ίᾱ (from grc ine-pro *-éh₂ *-i-eh₂). Cognate with la -ia. In some contexts (e.g., in words like grc ἀλήθεια and grc πᾰρᾰ́νοιᾰ), the use of this suffix may have been an innovative replacement of earlier formations in grc -ίᾱ (which was kept or changed to grc -ίη in some dialects).A Reverse Index of Greek Nouns and Adjectives Carl Darling Buck; Walter Petersen 121 https://books.google.com/books?id=RJc80HS5FxMC&pg=PA121 1984Le développement historique des finales ‑ειᾰ/‑είᾱ/‑είη (att. ὑγίεια/ὑγιείᾱ, ion. ὑγιείη « bonne santé ») et ‑οιᾰ/‑οίᾱ/‑οίη (att. εὔπλοια, ion. εὐπλοίη « bonne navigation ») en grec ancien Alcorac Alonso Déniz Dérivation nominale et innovations dans les langues indo‑européennes anciennes Lyon MOM Éditions 2021 978-2-35668-169-0 https://doi.org/10.4000/books.momeditions.11060 Blanc, Alain; Boehm, Isabelle
After a consonant, the vowel ine-pro *i changed to a semivowel ine-pro *y and triggered palatalization in Proto-Greek, resulting in many nouns and adjectives ending in grc -σσᾰ, grc -ττᾰ, grc -ζᾰ. It also undergoes metathesis, resulting in grc -ιρᾰ, and grc -ινᾰ.
