Phrygian
Etymology
xpg :af -εος
According to Obrador-Cursach, from xpg *Kubel-<ng:name of a mountain> naf -εος<t:pertaining to> -eyos280-281. According to Šorgo, a derivation "from a non-native theonym", i.e. xpg qfa-sub. Compare grc Κυβέλη.
Mountain Obrador-Cursach argues that grc Κυβέλη is derived from the name of a mountain based on a story from Diodorus of Sicily and a mention in Strabo:
grc Diodorus Siculus Historical Library 3 58 γήμαντα δὲ Δινδύμην γεννῆσαι μὲν παιδίον θῆλυ, τρέφειν δ’ αὐτὸ μὴ βουλόμενον εἰς
ὄρος ἐκθεῖναι τὸ προσαγορευόμενον Κύβελον καὶ προσαγορεῦσαι Κυβέλην ἀπὸ τοῦ τόπου Charles Henry Oldfather and [Meion] marrying Dindymê he begat an infant daughter, but being unwilling to rear her he exposed her on the mountain which was called Cybelus and called her Cybelê after the name of the place 1
grc Strabo Geography 12 5 3 ἔστι δὲ καὶ ὄρος ὑπερκείμενον τῆς πόλεως τὸ Δίνδυμον, ἀφ’ οὗ ἡ Δινδυμηνή, καθάπερ ἀπὸ τῶν Κυβέλων ἡ Κυβέλη H. L. Jones There is also a mountain situated above the city, Dindymum, after which the country Dindymenê was named, just as Cybelê was named after Cybela. 1
