First attested as Laag Soeren in 1830-1855. Compound of nl laag low and a second element that is perhaps related to gmq-osw sôr barren, dry, nl dum sôor dry, rough, sore, from Proto-Germanic gem-pro *sauzaz. A derivation from a contracted form of nl odt *sūthar southern, south is not backed up by the oldest attestations of the toponym.
