Etymology
From Latin la muscōsum, accusative singular of la muscōsus, meaning mossy. Doublet of es musgoso. Early forms of the surname came in the form "Mosscosso," which supports the aforementioned origin, given it is the voicing of late Latin 's' that gave rise to the g in 'sc' clusters in Spanish and Galician (such as in es musgoso). Alternatively, from gl mosca oso fly place with. However, there are few, if any examples, in which Latin word-final "a" becomes "o", making this latter etymology unlikely. The surname, from a Galician Medieval noble house.
