Etymology
de gmw-pro gem-pro 2
From de gmh elle, from de goh elina, from de gmw-pro *alinu. The form gmh elle is most readily explained as an assimilation of syncopated gmh elne (like gmh müller from earlier gmh mülnære). Alternatively it can also be a backformation from apocopated gmh eln eln, elen. Cognate with en ell, which compare.

Usage notes
The length of the ell varied greatly. In German-speaking Europe it was usually between 50 and 60 cm, thus only half of the English ell of 114 cm. Certain German ells measured up to about 90 cm, however.
