Etymology
Related to or from Medieval Greek el Κλεισούρα (compare el κλεισούρα), originally meaning "an enclosure, defile", itself either from rup la-lat clausūra, from rup la clausus, or from grc κλείς narrow strait or gorge. The aforementioned Greek term is also the Greek name for the town, as well as another in Larissa, and once referred to a fortified mountain pass and military district in medieval times. A surface analysis of the Aromanian word also indicates it seems to be composed of the elements rup cljis (as past participle of the verb rup cljid, variant of rup ncljid to close, and corresponding to Latin la clausus; cf. the more common rup ncljis) and the suffix rup -ura, from the corresponding Latin suffix. It is more likely that the Aromanian word came through the Greek intermediate rather than deriving straight from Latin la clausūra. There is also a small town in southern Albania named sq Këlcyrë, likely from the same Greek word (cf. also sq këshyre). Several other locations in the Balkans, linked to narrow straits or passes, have similar names.http://www.academia.edu/29728147/Defending_the_passes_in_the_Haemus_Mountains._From_clausura_to_kleisoura_Cultur%C4%83_%C5%9Fi_Civiliza%C5%A3ie_la_Dun%C4%83rea_de_Jos_C%C4%83l%C4%83ra%C5%9Fi_29_2016_p._213-222 The word appears in South Slavic languages as sh klisura. See also (Daco-) Romanian ro clisură narrow key-shaped valley near the straits of the Danube (which likely came through a South Slavic intermediate like Serbian; cf. also Ukrainian klisura).http://www.dex.ro/clisur%C4%83
