Etymology
The origin is hy unknown. Confined to Eastern dialects, with the earliest attestation in the 17th century.I 71 Ačaṙyan remarks that derivation from xcl -ագոյն (of Iranian origin) is impossible, because no hy գ → hy վ sound change is known in the dialects. But perhaps that change occurred within an hy ira language, where such a change is known, and thence was borrowed into Armenian.
Compare also ckb -ئەوِن, forming adjectives from nouns.
