Etymology

Pronunciation

Suffix
be suffix noun-forming suffixes
Abstract noun suffix; forms part of larger suffixes such as be -э́нне or be -а́нне, and exists on its own especially as a suffix added to compound words.
be без- without люд people бязлю́ддзе absence of people
be но́вы new -а- сялі́ць to settle навасе́лле housewarming
be над- above хма́ра cloud надхма́р'е area above the clouds; (poetic) skies, heavens
be па- across, along грані́ца border паграні́чча region along the border
be за- ці́хі quiet, still заці́шша lull, calm
be без- without даро́га path бездаро́жжа impassibility
Suffix used to create names of locations in conjunction with prefixes.
be за- Каўка́з Caucasus Закаўка́ззе Transcaucasia
be пры- Днестр Dniester -о́вы Прыднястро́ўе Transnistria
Usage notes
When appended onto a stem ending in a labial consonant, the suffix becomes be -'е, as in be сухазем'е. Exception: stems ending in в, where в becomes ў instead, e.g. be пры- + be сло́ва + be -е → be прысло́ўе rather than be *прысло́в'е.
When appended onto a stem ending in a velar consonant, the Slavic first palatalization applies, its result is gemination geminated, and the suffix becomes be -а, e.g. be без- + be даро́га + be -е → be бездаро́жжа.
When appended onto a stem ending in р, the suffix generally becomes be -'е, as in be надхма́р'е, although be -а is also possible; see be паве́тра.
Otherwise, when appended onto a stem ending in a single palatalizable consonant, that consonant is usually gemination geminated and reflected as such in spelling.
Syllable stress is usually drawn onto the syllable before the suffix.
