Old Georgian
Etymology
Ultimately from oge ira-mid und *-ak, either directly or via oge xcl -ակ.
Has developed into ka -ა diminutive in Modern Georgian. The loss of final oge -კ- is an inner-Georgian development and has been remarked upon by Shanidze and Gippert in the context of the pairs oge აგარაჲ ← oge აგარაკი, ka დანა ← oge დანაკი and oge სენაჲ ← oge სენაკი; it is dated by Gippert to not later than the late 10th century based on the attestation of oge სენაჲ.138 15I 64–65, 235 The law seems to have operated on all final oge -აკი sequences, whether in wholly-borrowed terms or inner-Georgian formations with the suffix oge -აკი, including ka ბაზმა, ka ბანა, ka ბურნა, ka გავა, ka გაზა, ka გალია, ka გლახა, ka გოვზა, ka გვარდა, ka დაშნა, ka დორა, ka დროშა, ka დუმა, ka ეშმა, ka ვარია, ka ზვარა, ka კერა, ka კვირა, ka მიჯნა, ka მუშა, ka პინა, ka პიტნა, ka რემა, ka სენა, ka სვია, ka ქორა, ka ძირა, ka წინდა, ka ჭალა, ka ჭაშა.
The development of oge -აკი into ka -ა must have been via an intermediate stage ka -აჸი̆ which survives in the conservative Tushetian Georgian and was likely borrowed as bbl -აჸო̆.80, footnote 13 Compare the following chains:
oge ჭალაკი (→ Tushetian ka ჭალაჸი̆ → bbl ჭალაჸო̆) → ka ჭალა
oge პიტნაკი (→ Tushetian ka პიტნაჸი̆ → bbl პიტნაჸო̆) → ka პიტნა
oge კჳრიაკჱ (→ Tushetian ka კვირაჸეჲ → bbl კვირაჸო̆) → ka კვირა
