German
Etymology
From de gmh scharte f, also gmh schart f m, from the adjective de goh *scart (“wounded, cut up”, attested in goh liduscart), from de gem-pro *skardaz. Related with de scheren to shear.
Cognate with dum schaert m, gml schārt n, ang sceard n, non skarð n. All possibly from de gem-pro *skardą, although the deviating genders in Dutch and High German may suggest independent derivations from the adjective. See en sherd, en shard for more.
