Norwegian Bokmål
Etymology
nb ine-pro *steh₂-
nb stéh₂tis
nb non *Bjúgsstaðir Bjúgr's farmsteads, the form reconstructed by Oluf Rygh, from the genitive singular non Bjúgr Bjúgs of the male personal name non Bjúgr + non staðr staðir places, farmsteads, the plural of non staðr place, stead, literally “Bjúgr's farmsteads”.
The second element non staðr is from nb gem-pro *stadiz place, location, from nb ine-pro *stéh₂tis standing, position, from the root ine-pro *steh₂- to stand.
The personal name non Bjúgr is formally identical to the Old Norse adjective non bjúgr bent, crooked. The adjective belongs to a Germanic word family ultimately derived from Proto-Indo-European ine-pro *bʰewgʰ- to bend, curve. Rygh, however, identifies the first element specifically as the personal name without establishing that the personal name itself derives from the adjective, so this deeper connection is uncertain.
The historical spelling nb Bjugstad Biugstad is 1604 1, and also in 1616, 1669 and 1723.
Compare nb Bygstad farm name of the same origin, which Rygh identifies as the same farm-name formation in Indre Holmedal.

Usage notes
The traditional local pronunciation of the farm name has /kː/ and the reduced second element /sta/, rather than a spelling pronunciation based directly on modern nb stad. Pronunciation of the surname may vary and should not automatically be inferred from the local farm-name pronunciation.
The historical Bjugstad farm name comprises two cadastral farms, Øvre Bjugstad (gårdsnummer 48) and Nedre Bjugstad (gårdsnummer 49), which have subsequently been divided into numerous individual holdings.
