Etymology
From Low Franconian and de nds - dialects along the Dutch border, which it entered (before 1930) from de nl fiets, perhaps partly through de nds-nl fietse. Further origin uncertain. In an alternative theory, the direction of derivation went the other way. See the Dutch etymology.
