According to Alessio-De Giovanni, the name derives from a Mediterranean pre-IE la qfa-sub - und *alt swamp
Comparable with Altaenus in en Apulia, from a dental extension *alt- of la itc-pro *alō, from la ine-pro *h₂életi grow, nourish, making it a doublet of la altus tall, high. This is supported by Pokorny and Frisk.
According to Duridanov, the extension *alt- is from la ine-pro *ol-to flooded, from ine-pro *el- to flow.
