Etymology
la ine-pro *dyew-
la :inh itc-pro:*djous patēr<id:Jupiter> Chief Roman god
The nominative la Iuppiter, for la Iūpiter (with shift of the length from vowel to consonant per the littera la littera rule), comes from the vocative combined with la pater, and essentially meant "father Jove"; from la itc-pro *djous patēr, from itc-pro *djous day, sky + itc-pro *patēr father, from la ine-pro *dyḗws the bright one, root nomen agentis from ine-pro *dyew- to be bright, day sky, and ine-pro *ph₂tḗr father. Cognate with xum 𐌉𐌖𐌐𐌀𐌕𐌄𐌓, and in other branches of Indo-European sa द्यौष्पितृ dyáuṣ-pitṛ́, grc Ζεῦ πάτερ o father Zeus. Equivalent to la diēs (cf. la Iovis) + la pater.
The oblique cases la Iovis Iov-, Iovis continue the inflection of la ine-pro *dyḗws. Cognates are Latin la diēs (originating from the accusative case of itc-pro *djous) and grc Ζεύς.
