Finnish
Etymology
fi kuhmo- inen. The initial component has been explained in two ways: by derivation from fi kuhmu (thus "hill"), or, more likely, akin to fi kumottaa, fi kuumottaa visible to loom, be barely vislble. As the name has generally been associated with high points of elevation, the "looming" would have referred to terrain, or alternatively to beacons (signal fires).
