The town was reportedly founded, or perhaps renovated, by Grand Vizir Koca Sinan Pasha Koxha Sinan Pasha, whose epithet suffixed with the Slavic suffix sq -nik became the name of the town. The devoicing of /d͡ʒ/ in this context is characteristic of Albanian, most likely due to influenc of the sq kaca- kaça- prefixoid, and also observed in the corradical sq koçobash.
