Etymology
nb, ultimately from nb la Aethiopia, from nb grc Αἰθιοπία, from grc Αἰθίοψ Ethiopian + grc -ία.
The Ancient Greek name originally had a much broader geographical application than the name of the modern country, referring to peoples and lands south of Egypt. The name later became associated with the Ethiopian highlands and the states developing there. The same Greek name was borrowed into Ge'ez gez ኢትዮጵያ and Amharic am ኢትዮጵያ Ethiopia.
nb Ultimate origin uncertain. Ancient Greek grc Αἰθίοψ has since antiquity traditionally been analysed as a compound of grc αἴθω to burn and grc ὤψ face, giving the familiar interpretation “burnt face”. This traditional explanation is also found in Norwegian reference works. It is, however, generally regarded as a folk etymology; Beekes argues on phonological and morphological grounds that the word is probably of Pre-Greek substrate origin.
Parallel international adaptations include da Etiopien, sv Etiopien, de Äthiopien, nl Ethiopië, fr Éthiopie and en Ethiopia.
