German
Etymology
de :inh gmh:-bære<ety:inh<goh:-bāri<ety:inh<gem-pro:*bēriz>>>>
From de gmh -bære, from de goh -bāri, from de gem-pro *bēriz.
The modern vowel -a- is after the adverb form (gmh -bāre, goh -bāro), which came to be used in predicative and then also in attributive position. This development was especially Low and Central German (compare de gml -bāre -bār(e) alongside gml -bēre -bēr(e)). Also cognate with nl -baar, fy -ber, gsw -bar, ang -bǣre.22 -bar non -bærrnon (gmq-osw -bǣrgmq-osw). This suffix is said to be West Germanic, so the Old Norse form is probably an early Middle Low German borrowing.
