rhine
English
Etymology
From en enm Rine, enm Ryne, from en ang Rīn the Rhine, from en gmh - and en goh Rīn, from en gmw-pro *Rīn, from en gem-pro *Rīnaz, from en cel-gau Rēnos, from a Pre-Celtic or en cel-pro *reinos; one of a class of river names built from en ine-pro *h₃reyH- to move, flow, run.326 etymon 3. er- : or- : r- 'to move, set in motion' (laryngealistic reconstruction as "*h₁reiH").
Cognate with goh Rīn "the Rhine"; > de Rhein, non Rín the Rhine, nl Rijn the Rhine. Related also to Latin la rivus ("river"), in Celtic with an -n- suffix as in sga rían rīan run (more at en run).
The spelling with Rh- is due to the influence of Ancient Greek grc Ῥῆνος (via en fr Rhin).
