Dutch
Etymology
First attested as santpoort in 1389. Etymology nl unknown. Not derived from la-med sanctus holy and la-med porta gate. The toponym is also not a compound of dum sant sand and dum port harbour, as the area around Velsen was not used for sand extraction until the Early Modern era. The toponym may be a compound of dum sant sand and la-med porta guesthouse, a name possibly coined as a joke by monks from Egmond Abbey. The element nl noord north was added to distinguish the settlement from nl Santpoort-Zuid.
