schnäuze
German
Alternative forms
de Schnauße obsolete
Etymology
16th century, from de gml snûte, whence also the later doublet de Schnute pouting mouth 1. Further from de osx *snūt, from de gmw-pro *snūt snout. Cognate with nl snuit, en snout.
The forms Schnauße and somewhat later Schnauze are artificial adaptations to High German consonantism, probably under the influence of de schnäuzen to blow one’s nose, from gmw-pro *snūtijan. An original High German cognate, albeit with a different stem formation, is at hand in gmw-cfr Schnüss, hrx Schniss, lb Schnëss.
