pictus
Latin
Etymology
Superficially from Latin la pictus painted one, but probably rendering a la xpi - autonym, probably related to the origin of another la cel - tribe, the la Pictones (compare en Poitiers); perhaps from a la cel-pro *Kʷritanī, cel-pro *Kʷritenī, the la cel-gae -/Q-Celtic version of the Brittonic/P-Celtic cel-bry-pro *Pritani, whence cy Prydyn Picts, mga Cruithne, mga Cruithentúaith Cruithen-túaith Picts, ultimately from la ine-pro *kʷer- to do. Guto Rhys has noted a possible connection to owl Peithan, perhaps attesting the same element as cy gobaith hope, although the etymology is uncertain, it would presumably derive from a la cel-bry-pro *pext-.
