Etymology 2
The reference to Jesus is from the first three letters of Jesus' name in la grc-koi -, grc Ἰησοῦς ΙΗΣΟΥΣ, arising perhaps circa 14th century. The interpretation as an initialism of la Iēsūs Hominum Salvātor Jesus, saviour of men is apparently a later la 1 when the Greek was no longer remembered. (See Christogram on Wikipedia.)
