Latin
Etymology
Ultimately from the same source as osc 𐌌𐌀𐌌𐌄𐌓𐌕-, la Mārs and la Mārcus. Perhaps as a less Latinized form of la Māmurius Māmur(r)ius, a Latinization (via suffix replacement) of la ett 𐌌𐌀𐌌𐌖𐌓k𐌄𐌔, an alternative form of ett 𐌌𐌀𐌌𐌀𐌓𐌂𐌄𐌔 𐌌𐌀𐌌𐌀𐌓𐌂𐌄𐌔, 𐌌𐌀𐌌𐌄𐌓𐌂𐌄𐌔; the latter borrowed unadapted as la Māmercus. The /rj > rr/ is characteristic of Oscan; the varying treatment of /ar/ rather of Etruscan. The Etruscan name itself was a borrowing (likely from la osc -Durante, M. (1958): Prosa ritmica, alliterazione e accento nelle lingue dell'Italia antica. Ricerche Linguistiche 4: pages 84-85Simone, C. de (1970): Die griechischen Entlehnungen im Etruskischen. Vol. 2. Wiesbaden: Otto Harrassowitz: pages 85-86), possibly formed as *Māmart-ikos. For the suffix interchange, compare la spurcus and la spurius, also potential borrowings from Etruscan.
