Etymology
de la grc sem
From de gmh lewe, gmh löuwe, gmh lauwe, from de goh lewo, goh lēo, from de gmw-pro *lēwō *lewo, *lēwo lion.
The spelling -ew- in Middle High German generally represents a diphthong [øy̯(w)], and accordingly the expected form in Modern German is de Leu Leu(e) (cf. de freuen). The form de Löwe with a monophthong and consonantal -w- is most readily explained from a long-vowel variant gmh lēwe, which would correspond to nl leeuw.
